Across its 2021, 2022, and 2023 seasons, UNTAME needed to make STEM learning feel like an adventure rather than a lesson. Each edition combined an online game with Science Centre Singapore’s physical festival, while changing its theme, missions, rewards, and onsite programme without losing the progression loop that brought players through the experience.
For UNTAME 2021: Rebooting Our World, I helped build a virtual world where players restored sustainability-themed habitats through exploration, resource collection, quizzes, and Phaser and PixiJS mini-games. The platform also connected livestreams, public voting, ticketing, physical kits, QR-based onsite activities, leaderboards, and prize redemption, supported by a separate operations dashboard for staff.
The 2022 Spaces to Places season shifted into a configurable mission platform linking online play with physical checkpoints. Its staff-facing tools covered mission steps, questions, media, locations, O2O activity types, announcements, DIY kits, Science Buskers entries, accounts, and camera-based prize redemption — allowing festival content and onsite operations to be managed without rebuilding each flow.
For UNTAME 2023: Flavours, the experience became a food-sustainability adventure across Agro Lab, Jumbo Forest, Nourish Factory, Burgerlicious Diner, and Harvest Emporium. Players completed story-led missions, mini-games, video quizzes, and real-world activities, earned resources and milestones, climbed the leaderboard, redeemed rewards, and could join a location-based Silver Burger Quest. The player app and embedded CMS shared the same Vue and Quasar platform for faster live-event operations.
The result was a reusable hybrid-festival platform that evolved across three annual themes while keeping digital learning connected to physical participation. Game systems, configurable missions, QR redemption, rewards, and staff tooling gave Science Centre Singapore a cohesive way to run both the player journey and the operational side of each festival season.
